Climate Heating in New England Faster Than the Vast Majority on Earth, Study Finds.
The US region famous for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-covered winters is undergoing a dramatic transformation. A recent study indicates that New England is warming faster than almost anywhere else on the planet.
Breakneck Pace of Change
The velocity of warming in New England makes it the most rapidly warming area of the contiguous United States, according to the research. The rate of its temperature rise has apparently increased significantly in the past five years.
"Temperatures is not only increasing, it's accelerating," stated a lead researcher on the study. "It's really sped up in recent years, which was unexpected to me. Our regional climate is shifting in a different trajectory, after being largely consistent for millennia."
The research places the north-eastern US among the fastest-warming areas in the world, alongside the Arctic and sections of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the scientist added.
Analysis Approach and Findings
For the analysis, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on daily temperature extremes and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of the New England region.
They discovered that New England has heated up by an mean of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by approximately 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is extremely rapid warming, which is alarming," commented the researcher.
Key Warming Patterns
- Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than daytime temperatures.
- Winters are heating up at twice the rate of other times of year.
- The harsh winter chill characteristic of the region is being eroded.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A primary cause for this exceptional accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are absorbing more than 90% of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Arctic ice melt is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing heated ocean water into the Gulf of Maine, concentrating heat along the shoreline that is then carried further inland by prevailing winds.
"Surplus thermal energy from global warming is being held in the oceans like a huge battery," explained the researcher. "This is now being discharged into the air and New England is a recipient of that heat."
Consequences on Life and Weather
Once considered a mild climate haven, New England has suffered extreme weather shocks in recent years, including enormous flooding and prolonged dry spells.
The rising heat poses a threat to iconic elements of local culture:
- Syrup production is being affected by changing seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are disrupted; an hockey tournament on frozen lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have struggled because of inadequate snowfall.
"I live just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to skate on the local ponds all the time," said the researcher. "That sort of thing has largely disappeared from much of southern New England."
