A trio of officers perished and at least 15 people were hurt in an apparently deliberate blast caused by gas at a farmhouse in Italy's north.

How It Happened

The explosion occurred as police and firefighters entered the residence close to the Verona region to execute an removal notice for two brothers and a sister aged in their 50s and 60s.

Each of the three victims who died were members of the Italian military police.

Arrests and Aftermath

A man and a woman were arrested at the scene and a third person who escaped following the blast was located soon after. Each of them have been taken to medical facility.

The detonation could be noticed as far as 3 miles distant and photographs from the location showed the building turned into a heap of debris.

“This is a time for grieving,” stated the Interior Minister Minister Piantedosi, who mentioned that attempts had been made to displace the brother and sister trio in the past.

Financial Context

The president of the Veneto area, the regional head, said the property was subject to an removal notice due to unpaid amounts incurred by the three owners.

Mediators had been assigned to speak to the family members who had barricaded themselves into the house. When the Carabinieri reached the location just after 03:00 (01:00 GMT), authorities believe one of the residents set off the blast.

“As we went inside, we encountered a completely deranged action,” provincial police commander Commander Papagno stated to the media.

“A gas cylinder had been set off, and the explosion precisely impacted our personnel,” he said.

Molotov cocktails were also found at the site, the interior minister said.

Impact Assessment

Those injured by the explosion comprised 11 other members of the police force as well as three officers of the state police and a emergency responder.

As stated by the Verona prosecutor, the building was in a dilapidated shape and had no electricity.

He thought the explosion had taken place on a floor above the access point and told reporters it was a “intentional and planned killing”. Just prior to the explosion, he revealed members had “detected a whistling noise, probably the gas cylinders being activated”.

“We all knew the situation was dire,” neighbors informed Italian media, mentioning that the three had previously threatened to “detonate the property” rather than leave the house.
